Architecture & Environment

The module introduces the relationship between building design and the surrounding environment. At the same time, it teaches the student how human interventions are affecting the surroundings in both positive and negative ways. Examples of topics that are discussed are such as  climate, thermal comfort, daylighting, ventilation, acoustics and many more. Besides that, the module is assessed through a variety of assignments and online test to further enhance student's analytical skills, familiarity and understanding on the weekly lecture provided.

Reflection

In a nutshell, I've realized the importance to create awareness in making architecture sustainable through the application of active and passive design. Hence, it is crucial to understand and relate building design to it's context such as responding to the local climatic conditions so it helps in reducing the energy consumption of a building. Through working in groups, I was also able to identify different issues and challenges faced in making architecture sustainable, at the same time proposing possible solutions to overcome those problems. Furthermore, I've also learned that architecture is not all about aesthetics and visuals only, but we should also pay attention and emphasize on it's functionality, comfort and the impact towards the surrounding environment.

Project 1

In groups of 4, students are tasked to select and research on a topic related to “What is Sustainable Architecture?”. The concept of Sustainable Architecture should also be communicated through illustrations such as images, poster infographic, diagrams etc. Besides that, students are also encouraged to think creatively and innovatively during group discussions, essay writing and tutorials

Project 2

In groups of 6, students are to select a building as case study to research and identify topics such as daylighting, artificial lighting, passive building design strategies and the climatic condition of the site. Students are encouraged to apply their understanding and knowledge acquired through the weekly lecture sessions during this case study and produce a A3 size Research Poster with thorough analysis and neat composition.
